14K vs 18K Gold: Which Karat Is Right for You?

Every piece at Riyanika Jewels is made with solid gold - never plated, filled, or vermeil. The karat you choose changes the gold content, the colour, and the way the piece wears over time. Here is what you need to know.

What karat means

Karat measures the proportion of pure gold in the alloy. Pure gold (24K) is too soft for jewelry, so it is mixed with other metals for strength. The remaining metals - typically silver, copper, zinc, and palladium - affect colour, hardness, and durability.

14K solid gold

14K gold is 58.3% pure gold. The higher proportion of alloying metals makes it slightly harder and more scratch-resistant, which is why it is a practical choice for pieces worn every day. The colour is a slightly softer, cooler yellow than 18K. In white gold, a rhodium finish brings both karats to the same bright white appearance.

Good for: rings and bracelets worn daily, active lifestyles, everyday fine jewelry.

18K solid gold

18K gold is 75% pure gold. The higher gold content gives it a richer, deeper yellow colour and a warmer tone that many people find more luxurious. It is slightly softer than 14K, which makes it particularly well suited to pieces that are worn occasionally or handled with some care - earrings, pendants, and special-occasion pieces.

Good for: earrings, necklaces, occasion jewelry, pieces where colour and richness matter most. 18K is Riyanika's signature karat.

White gold and rose gold

Both 14K and 18K are available in yellow, white, and rose gold. White gold is alloyed with palladium or silver and finished with rhodium plating for a bright, cool appearance. Rose gold gets its warm pink tone from a higher copper content. The karat rules above apply across all three colours.

Which should you choose?

If you are buying a ring or bracelet you will wear every day, 14K is the more practical choice - it holds up better to daily knocks. If you are buying earrings, a necklace, or a special gift, 18K gives you a richer colour and a more luxurious feel. When in doubt, match what she already wears.
